The school holidays are just starting and for many people, there are weeks of summer ahead and seemingly endless days to fill with activities. Thankfully, there are lots of places to visit in Somerset which are full of natural beauty that you can explore. From beaches to lakes, there is plenty to keep you entertained. All of the places in this blog are within an hour of our self-catering cottages in Somerset and allow you to have a flexible and relaxing holiday as well as see the sights in Somerset.

St Audrie’s Bay

Situated in the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, St Audrie’s Bay is about 40 minutes from our self-catering accommodation in Somerset. The bay is a rock and shingle beach, which allows you to explore and take in the scenery. The main attraction of this bay is the two waterfalls that cascade down the cliffs, providing a great photo opportunity. This bay is a lovely place to visit in Somerset for a beautiful seaside walk. It’s worth noting that this bay is down several steps, so is not easily accessible for everyone.

Minehead Beach

Perfect for those of you who want some time to relax, build sandcastles or have a kick around in the sand, Minehead beach offers plenty of activities for everyone. At Minehead, there is a wide sandy beach and harbour, as well as plenty of opportunities to have a swim or do some paddleboarding. If you bring a picnic from our self-catering accommodation in Somerset, you have the perfect free day out for all the family.

Bridgwater and Taunton Canal

Although not technically a river or natural water source, the Bridgwater and Taunton canal has a lot to offer as well as being a stone’s throw from our holiday accommodation in Somerset. Whilst you’re visiting, we highly recommend the Space Walk, which is a sculpture trail model of our solar system. This shows a proportional model of our sun and its planets along the canal and gives visitors an idea of how vast the solar system is. Not only is this an educational walk for children and adults but it is also a beautiful one, with plenty of places to stop and relax.

River Parrett and Bridgwater Bay

Bridgwater Bay is at the end of the River Parrett trail, which you can join at any point to enjoy the local wildlife and natural beauty of the river and Somerset. Our self-catering cottages in Somerset are less than half an hour away from the bay and you can visit at any time to enjoy the sea air.

Wimbleball Lake

In the middle of the stunning Exmoor National Park, Wimbleball Lake has several walking and cycling trails to enjoy. These trails range from easy strolls to challenging hikes, so whatever holiday you are having, you can enjoy it at Wimbleball. Car parking is very reasonable at just £5 a day, making it one of the cheap and inviting places to visit in Somerset.
